Governor General Awards: Fans Share in Spotlight
Fans were the focus of Alex’s remarks at the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa May 4. A video of the band’s acceptance speeches has just been made available. “It has been a valuable asset to Rush’s success to have a loyal, involved, and sometimes forgiving fan base, and for that, we are truly grateful,” Alex said.
Neil credited the band’s families, staff, and crew for making it all possible, and Geddy acknowledged the depth and breadth of the other artists with whom they were sharing the recognition that night.
Here’s a transcription of their remarks that night:
NEIL: “No one arrives here on ther own, even in a band. For me, my parents are here tonight who started me with drum lessons at the age of 13 and unleashed 48 years of noise on the road. And our families, of course, have endured long and frequent absences, as we ply our trade around the world as proud Canadians. And of course we have a loyal and longstanding support group at our offices in Toronto and our road crew, again, that take us around the world and set up all that music for us. So, we’d like to accept this on behalf of all those well-wishers and supporters. And my collaborators of 38 years—”
ALEX: “An important component of any artist’s success is an audience willing to embrace our creativity. That support is key to the freedom and independence to create work that is honest and true to the artist’s intentions. It has been a valuable asset to Rush’s success to have a loyal, involved, and sometimes forgiving fan base, and for that, we are truly grateful and share the celebration of this very special honor.”
GEDDY: “I would just like to add how pleased we are to be sharing this honor with such a diverse and acomplished group of artists. I feel paticularly proud to live in a country where artistic achievements are valued and celebrated in a way that will hopefully inspire others throughout the coming years.”
Thanks to Rush is a Band for making the video link available on its site.
